This event explores legal, policy and procedural issues pertaining to housing adaptations & equipment for Children with Behaviours that Challenge. It is led by Michael Mandelstam, well-known expert on housing adaptations & the law and author of many guides on this topic. Michael is assisted by a member of the Viva Access OT training team.
Webinar Outline
This event starts with a brief presentation by Michael on the key pieces of legislation relating to housing adaptations, funding and children with behaviours that challenge. There then follows a mix of presentation, case scenarios and Q&A.
The webinar addresses 3 main topics:
(a) use of legislation to advocate for the child, particularly in relation to obtaining funding for equipment and adaptations e.g. safe play areas, spare rooms.
(b) safeguarding and zones of parental responsibility
(c) restrictive practices / deprivation of liberty
Attendees are welcome to raise queries and seek advice on casework during the webinar (subject to constraints of time).

About Michael Mandelstam
Independent Legal Trainer, Health and Social Care
Michael has provided independent legal training in health and social care for over 25 years.
He has written many legal books, for example most recently on Manual Handling in Health and Social Care (2nd edition, 2021).
And also written several publications for the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
He worked previously at the Department of Health within the Social Services Inspectorate, and before that at the Disabled Living Foundation.
